Steve Scoggins Resurfaces At JUCO

Steve Scoggins, an athletic 6-0, 178 pound shooting/combo guard who attended UNLV as a freshman last year, has transferred to Irvine Valley J.C. in Irvine, Calif., this fall.
Scoggins, who attended famed Mater Dei H.S. in Southern California prior to signing with UNLV in the spring of 2000, is hoping to bounce back on the Division I level next year.

Scoggins red-shirted at UNLV last year, and he is a high school qualifier. That means he can leave Irvine Valley after this year as long as he satisfies minimum NCAA eligibility requirements for junior college transfers.
According to Irvine Valley Head Coach Jerry Hernandez, Scoggins has already had initial interest from Sacramento State and Iona.
Probably the biggest concerns about Scoggins are his size and play-making skills. Scoggins is basically a two guard in a one's body, as he currently does not possess the instincts to play the point position and distribute to others.
While his speed and handle may be just average, Scoggins is still pretty athletic and is a fine shooter. If left open on the perimeter, he is a deadly catch and shoot three point marksman with his trademark rainbow jumpers.
This season at Irvine Valley will be a critical one for Scoggins. If he is able to improve on his quarterbacking skills, then it is likely he will sign somewhere on the Division I level in the spring. He always has the option of playing a second year at Irvine should he decide that another year would be in his best recruiting interests.
In either case, JUCO Junction/Rivalshoops.com will keep you posted on Scoggins this year, so stay tuned!
