1. DECISION LOOMING FOR BRIAN BOWEN?
For a while now, five-star Brian Bowen has said that he wants to see who leaves and who stays among his finalists. Basically the only player left to make a decision regarding the NBA at any of the schools that Bowen is considering was Arizona shooting guard Rawle Alkins.
Sunday, Alkins backed up rumblings that he would pull out of the 2017 NBA Draft by announcing he is returning to Arizona. With Allonzo Trier already back and 2018 five-star forward Emmanuel Akot's Monday decision to enroll early, the Wildcats would appear to be out. Most recently, Bowen took an unofficial to Oregon. There has been speculation that DePaul could make a run at him after hiring his high school coach, Shane Heirman, as an assistant. The others that Bowen continues to list are Creighton, Michigan State, N.C. State and Texas.
For the past few months there have been several times where Bowen was rumored to be near a decision. Here we are again, as rumors are once again swirling that he could have a decision soon. In fact, it wouldn't be a surprise if Bowen announced something in the first half of the week. Then again, it wouldn't be a surprise if he continued to wait.
If Bowen is near a decision, the best that we can tell is that Creighton and Oregon appear to be in the best shape. Creighton has been perceived as maybe the team to beat for the last month or so, but Oregon is making a big push. From the outside in it looks like the late push will be enough for the Ducks to nab him if this thing comes to a close in the near future.
2. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH M.J. WALKER?
If the Bowen situation seems confusing, it has nothing on the recruitment of five-star shooting guard M.J. Walker. With Bowen, there are at least some rumblings coming out here and there. With Walker, there is no information leaking and he seems to be popping up almost randomly on campuses for official visits.
During April it was a random official visit to Virginia Tech, then last week Walker showed up at UCLA. Previously, he had visited Florida State officially, and he's been very familiar with the Georgia Tech campus.
For much of Walker's recruitment, distance has been said to be a major factor. But if that's the case, visits this late in the process to Virginia Tech and UCLA don't make much sense.
Buzz Williams and the Hokies seemed to be gaining serious steam, but after the trip to Westwood the Bruins and the Seminoles have been getting the most talk.
So far there's been nothing from Walker about a timetable, and there's no ruling out additional visits. Normally when there is any real info to talk about there are at least some rumors, but with Walker there aren't even any of those. It's one of the most tightly run ships of anybody in recent years.
3. ST. JOHN'S ADDS FOUR-STAR WING
It took a while, but St. John's got on the board in the high school class of 2017 when Bronx native Sidney Wilson committed to the Red Storm.
Wilson spent the last year at Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy and had planned to take a post graduate year and be a member of the class of 2018. However, his game took off at Brewster and there wasn't any need to hold off on a decision.
A four-star prospect who had risen all the way up to No. 58 nationally in the class of 2018, Wilson is a long and wiry wing with plus athleticism who is at his best as a slasher to the rim and transition finisher. His length and quickness will allow him to develop into a high-level defender if he wants to put in the effort to be one, and his jump shot shows promise.
Strength, or lack of it, could still be an issue for Wilson as a freshman, but his addition is a huge one for Chris Mullin and has staff. St. John's has also landed Quinnipiac transfer Mikey Dixon in this recruiting cycle.
4. WILLS A PRIME EAST COAST TARGET IN 2019
With a top-30 ranking and the ability to play both the point and shooting guard positions for stretches, combo guard Bryce Wills is going to be a major target on the East Coast in 2019.
Sunday night, Wills told Rivals.com that he's scored his latest ACC offer as Pittsburgh offered him a scholarship.
Pitt joins Maryland, Villanova, Wake Forest, Gonzaga, Connecticut, St. John's, Minnesota, Providence, UMass, Temple and VCU as programs that have offered.
This spring and summer Wills is running with the New York Rens in Nike's EYBL, and he appears to be taking his time saying that he's not taken any recent unofficials and that he has no plans for any visits in the near future.
5. ON HEELS OF VISIT, RIVALS150 GUARD LATHON ADDS ANOTHER OFFER
The stock of Rivals150 point guard Jordan Lathon continues to climb. Despite playing the April evaluation period events for Kansas City-based Team Rush with torn ligaments in his wrist, Lathon has continued to add high-major offers.
First to offer coming out of April was Danny Manning and Wake Forest. On Sunday, Lathon told Rivals.com that Iowa State has now offered.
The previous weekend, Lathon took an unofficial visit to Ames, and the sides must have liked each other.
Missouri has yet to offer under new coach Cuonzo Martin, but Lathon has moved up its list and will get a very long look during July. Others that have offered scholarships include Butler, Colorado, Florida Gulf Coast, DePaul and Tulsa.
Oklahoma is another campus that Lathon has seen, and the Sooners are also tracking him closely.
Currently, Lathon has no plans for any visits or to make an official list. He should be 100 percent by July.
