St. Thomas More Dumps Canada Grassroots

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND -- St. Thomas More had a defensive gameplan -- swarm senior star Denham Brown, who is headed to Connecticut next season. It worked. St. Thomas More knocked off Canada Grassroots, 85-65, at the 2002 National Prep Invitational held on the campus of Bryant College.
Despite Brown scoring a game-high 23 points on some pretty incredible moves, Denham was held in check by the relentless double and triple teamming by the quick and athletic St. Thomas More defenders.

While Brown was the main sparkplug for Canada Grassroots, St. Thomas More played together, setting screens and picks, freeing up plenty of open three-point opportunities.
John Zito, Kevin Reed, and Lenny Jefferson benefitted from these open chances. Zito continued his hot run. He scored 19 points. Jefferson ran a great floor game and battered the Canada defense with dribble penetration. He also scored as well. Jefferson scored 17 points, including three three-pointers.
Reed had 12 points, most of them in the second half. STM also received a huge boost from the inside play of Calvin Brown, who had 12 points and eight rebounds. Brown was one of the main reasons why STM was able to control the boards for most of the game.
The Connecticut staff was on hand to watch Denham Brown. They could not be disappointed. Brown is a great player who has a terrific handle for someone his size. He is likely going to be a great college player.
