Spain Forgoes the Summer Season

The summer evaluation period is typically the last opportunity for rising seniors to impress college coaches in the hopes of securing the coveted scholarship offer. Kyle Spain from Newark Memorial High School (Calif.) has decided to forgo the rigors of summer ball and has announced his college plans early.
"I committed to San Diego State," said Spain.

Other schools in the picture included Washington and Nevada. Interestingly, Cal offered a scholarship during his sophomore year, according to Spain.
Kyle was at the top of his game and on the cusp of becoming a national prospect the summer before his junior season. However, nagging injuries hampered his production throughout the high school season.
Despite the injuries, Spain managed 16.5 points and eight rebounds per game as a junior last season, earning All-Norcal honors in Division I.
The 6-foot-5 wing forward is no stranger to San Diego State. "I thought it was a good fit for me," said Spain. "I like the coaches and the players. My cousin [Marcus] goes there."
Spain says he will sit out the remainder of the summer and will not travel with a club team or participate in any camps. Instead, he will prepare for the upcoming high school season and spend time in the gym working out.
