Southern Illinois lands power forward

Southern Illinois picked up a commitment Sunday morning when Muncie Central High School star Jordan Armstrong chose the Salukis over offers from Miami (Ohio), Bowling Green and Ball State.
“I called the Southern Illinois coaches this morning and told them of my decision,” Armstrong said. “The staff was excited and so am I. It feels like the right fit for me and they have recruited me the hardest for the last year.

“I took an official visit in June and I love the atmosphere and the players. The campus has a nice feel and a strong business school and that’s what I plan to major in.”
Armstrong, 6-foot-7, 210-pounds, indicated that the new coaching staff was a key reason for his decision.
“At first I was worried with the coaching change but after I met the new staff I felt at ease,” Armstrong said. “Coach (Jack) Owens and I formed a quick bond and he had been recruiting for over a year. He explained how dedicated they were to being successful.
“When Coach (Chris) Lowery was named the new head coach he called me and told me the offer was still on the table. That really made an impression. He’s a nice guy and I think he will do a good job.”
Armstrong, who will join former AAU teammate Nick Rogers at Southern Illinois, will in Orlando (Fla.) this week for the AAU nationals.
