South Is Just Fine For Midwest Shooter

Rodney Carney, a 6-6, 205-pound forward from Northwest High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, told us his visit to Memphis was the clinching point in him signing a letter of intent with John Calipari's program.
"When I took the trip I really enjoyed meeting the players and hanging out with them," Carney said. "We went to a movie and had a great time. They are always constantly meeting up with each other and talking to each other."

Carney said another factor he chose Memphis over Oklahoma was that the Tigers campus was close for his family to come and watch him play. "It's only a six-hour drive," Carney said. "So my family can make some day trips and see me play a lot."
Carney said Oklahoma was the only other school he considered. He had previously expressed interest in Kentucky and Indiana.
Previously, Carney praised his visit to Oklahoma as a trip that was informative and fun. "I got a chance to see the campus and meet the coaches and players," Carney said. "It was a great trip. I enjoyed myself and I learned a lot about Oklahoma."
Carney said he was especially impressed with the friendship among the players. "I was very impressed with how close the players are," Carney said. "There is a great chemistry among the players there."
But the chemistry was quite good as well at Memphis. "Yes, they had a great time together and I felt a part of it too," Carney said.
Carney had a nice senior year. He averaged 21.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, and six blocks per game. He hit for 49 percent from the floor while knocking down 75 percent from the foul line.
"I think with all the players leaving I have a chance to get some minutes," Carney said. "Coach Calipari said he is going to need me to contribute next season. I am going to work on my strength this summer before I get there."
