South Florida has hit the ground running during Brian Gregory’s first full year on campus as they landed their third class of 2018 commitment on Monday. Xavier Castaneda, a 6-foot lead guard from Chicago, made his pledge to the Bulls, giving USF an immediate contributor at the point guard position.
Running the point guard position for the famed Whitney Young High program, Castaneda chose the Bulls over Wichita State, Kent State, Valparaiso and a slew of others power conference programs. "When I went to USF, it felt like home," he said. "It is the perfect fit for me. Me and coach (Brian Gregory) have developed a great relationship and I cannot wait to get down there."
Not one known for his scoring, though he did average over nine points per game on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer, Castaneda comes more in your playmaking variety. A member of the Meanstreets travel program, the heady senior was one of the top passers on the swoosh circuit, averaging close to five assists per game. He has the opportunity to walk in and player starters minutes next year, especially with the void that will be left by grad-transfer guard Stephan Jiggetts.
The third commitment in the 2018 class, Castaneda will join athletic and versatile wing Rashun Williams and recently committed big man Michael Durr in Tampa next fall, creating for a very sturdy group that should produce as freshmen.
The Bulls sit with the best class in the AAC and are the only league member to hold more than one class of 2018 commitment.
