Larry Brown and the SMU Mustangs wanted to find a big versatile guard in the class of 2016. They targeted three-star Dashawn McDowell heavily and were rewarded for their efforts.
A 6-foot-5 guard from Oklahoma City (Okla.) Southeast, McDowell spent the past two days on the Mustangs' Dallas campus and offered up a Saturday morning commitment.
"It was family first no matter what the case was and my education was more important to them than anything," McDowell told Rivals.com. "The bond and the way the kids and staff treated me on campus was great."
McDowell isn't just big for a guard - he brings several skills to the table. He can be a primary ball handler who makes plays for others off of the dribble. He can attack from the wing and score, he's very good in transition and he can defend all around the perimeter.
He said that Larry Brown is hoping to harness that versatility.
"I can play on the ball and off the ball, coach wants me to be able to play one through three just be a more all around player," said McDowell. "I feel I can bring a big leadership role and help us win a national championship, just help the team be successful."
McDowell is SMU's first commitment from the class of 2016.
