Smiley earned NJCAA Region XI first team honors as a sophomore and as a freshman at Southeastern Iowa College in West Burlington, Ia. As a sophomore, Smiley averaged 14.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals. As a freshman, he averaged 13.8 points and made 41.0% of his three-pointers.
Smiley prepped at Garfield High in Seattle, WA, where he averaged 19 points, 5.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds as a senior in 2000, leading his team to the Washington state championship.
USC also announced the signing of point guard Brandon Brooks on Tuesday. Brooks had committed to Iowa State in January but revised his plans following his dismissal from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, IA, and ISU's recruitment of ex-IHCC teammate Jerome Harper. Brooks, who is now enrolled at Compton Community College in Compton, CA, now will find a new home at USC, the school to which he had orally committed this past fall.
