Eufaula (Ala.) point guard Tony Johnson is starting to see his stock soar. After a great start to his sophomore year where he's been averaging 24 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds per game, coaches are beginning to flock to his games.
On Tuesday night, Johnson put up 25 points in front of coaches from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Troy. Florida State and Mississippi State have also been involved with him so far.
IN HIS OWN WORDS: Johnson, a three-star prospect in the class of 2018, has already spent time on the campuses of Alabama, Auburn and Georgia and told us what stood out most about each school.
Alabama: "I think Avery Johnson is hiring the people necessary to get it done. He's got the Texas ties, so he's been getting big time recruits. I mean, he was an NBA coach, so he definitely has some pull and he's winning some games this year. In the years to come, I think they'll be really good."
Auburn: "I think Coach Bruce Pearl is turning it around there. It's really been a football school, but he's kinda turned basketball around there. They have never really good basketball there. Well they have, but not recently."
Georgia: "The last few seasons they have had 20-win seasons. I think they are getting there as far as making it to the tournament. They have sent players to the League under Coach [Mark] Fox. I think they are a very successful program and have great history."
WHAT'S NEXT?: "I'm focused on my recruitment, but right now I'm really more focused on my season and finishing out strong in the classroom. We'll see how the summer goes and then I'm going to try to cut down my list by next fall. I'm going to try to have a commitment by the end of my junior year and get out of the way before my senior year."
RIVALS' REACTION: Johnson clearly has thought enough about his recruitment to know exactly how he wants the process to play out. Although it's in the early stages, it appears Alabama, Auburn and Georgia have all done a very good job with him and it would be a surprise if he does not end up at one of those schools. One factor to keep an eye on with him is where Garrison Brooks signs in the 2017 class, because Johnson and Brooks are very close and could decide to play together.
