Schools waiting on Smiths academics

There is no question about the fact that four-star 2006 prospect Kiwan Smith has the talent to play high-major basketball. The question for Smith, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound small forward from Laurinburg (N.C.) Prep, is whether or not he can get the job done in the classroom.
According to Coach Billy Reid of Laurinburg, most schools are hanging around with a wait and see approach to Smith's recruitment with three schools standing out.

"Southern Mississippi, Texas Tech and Tennessee are recruiting Kiwan the hardest right now," said Reid. "A lot of other schools are involved, but most are waiting to see what he does academically."
Averaging 21 points and 9 rebounds per game for 21-1 Laurinburg Prep, Smith is as athletic as they come.
"Kiwan is a freak athlete who plays with a lot of energy," said Reid. "He runs the floor extremely well and can do a lot of things for you offensively.
"He still needs to work on his overall play like being conscious of his shot selection and playing hard consistently. He has adapted well to us and taken to being coached. I do feel that he is getting better as a player."
