Salmon: No Decision Soon From Smith

Playaz head coach Jimmy Salmon rarely goes on the record when speaking about his players. But he had something to say tonight about the recruiting status of J.R. Smith, his outstanding wing player.
"There is no imminent decision," Salmon said. "I have received many phone calls today. There are no truth to the rumors. J.R. has not committed or is close to committing right now. I spoke to J.R. today and spoke to his dad last night."

Salmon said Smith was formally offered a scholarship today. But word had filtered out that Smith had been had offered a scholarship by North Carolina while J.R. was competing with the Playaz in Las Vegas. Head coach Roy Williams made several appearances in the month of July to watch Smith.
Smith has already stated Pittsburgh and Connecticut are high on his list along with North Carolina State. But Smith has stated previously if he was offered by the Tar Heels, he could make a decision in favor of UNC. In the parking lot at the College of New Jersey last night, Smith still stated UNC had to look over his transcript before they offered. They have, according to Salmon.
A source close to Smith stated to RivalsHoops.com tonight that J.R. is really interested in Pittsburgh and has a very good relationship with the coaching staff there. So if the process is extended, Smith might look at Pittsburgh or another school more seriously.
"It wouldn't surprise me if he made a decision next week and picked a school," Salmon said. "But right now he doesn't seem ready to make that decision."
