Russell scoring big in Florida

Throughout the high school season college coaches will be tracking senior prospects in anticipation of expected and unexpected needs during the late signing period. Tremayne Russell, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound point guard from South Dade High School in Homestead, Fla., is one prospect that coaches are keeping an eye on.
Russell presently has offers from Bethune-Cookman, Nicholls State and The Citadel. Schools such as Tulsa, UNC Greensboro, Central Florida, Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville, Massachusetts and George Mason are tracking him closely.

Even a couple high majors are currently in the mix.
"Ed Pickney from Villanova was down here for a practice," said South Dade coach John Herron. "He said they were looking for a guard, and he wanted to come back down and watch Tremayne in a game. Arkansas has also said they are looking around for a guard and are interested in Tremayne."
After averaging 19 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals per game last season, Russell is off to a fast start this season. Through the first four games of the season, Russell is averaging 25 points, 6 assists, 4rebounds and 4 steals.
This summer Russell missed out on the AAU circuit, but he was named the Top Lead Guard during a high profile session of the Five-Star Camp.
"Tremayne is doing a great job running the team," said Herron. "His strength is that he is a pure point guard who can score. He controls the tempo, scores and passes. People want to call him a combo because he scores, but I disagree. He is a point guard first."
