LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Pound for pound, you aren't likely to find many more competitive players in the class of 2018 than Rivals150 point guard Alex Lomax.

Not only is the product of Memphis a fiery competitor, he's also a big time leader who is all about making his teammates better. What's best about Lomax is that he doesn't have to be making a ton of shots to be at his best. Whether he's scoring or not, he's going to find a way to get things done.

"It comes from always being around guys that are older than me and following their example," Lomax told Rivals.com about his leadership ability. "Following people all the time isn't a good thing unless you are following the right people and now when I get around people that are my age or even older it became a habit from what I learned.

"My coaches are great leaders and I take after them also. It's just about being in the right situations and the right people."

In his recruitment, Lomax said that Memphis, Ole Miss, Florida, Wichita State, Vanderbilt and Missouri are currently standing out while LSU, Seton Hall, Mississippi State and Cincinnati have some involvement as wel.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Lomax took some time to discuss what he likes about the schools he listed as being in his upper tier.

Florida: "I talk to Florida pretty much every day, coach Mike White and assistant coach Jordan Mincy. It's a guard school and they just made it to the Elite Eight and that's a big time because not a lot of schools do that. They are a winning program and they've proven that by winning every year with one of the toughest schedules. You are always going to be seen there, you just have to come to play."

Memphis: "I talk to Tubby Smith almost every day, me and him are very close. I've really gotten to know Tubby and the entire staff. I was able to see them play and their system is pretty cool. I thought he did a pretty good job with a team that he didn't recruit to play his style of basketball. He's a legend and I'm thankful that he's able to coach in my city."

Missouri: "Coach Cuonzo Martin was the very first coach to offer me and the very first coach to show interest in me and I'll never forget that. I'm just thankful that he is able to see me before anybody else could. Coach Martin is tough and hard nose and we kind of grew up the same, so we kind of have a better relationship because I can relate to him."

Ole Miss: "I love Ole Miss. Ole Miss is a great guard school and a great overall school. They are a family and guard oriented, they like to win and they like to do it by going through their guards and just letting them play. That's good for me because they would trust me with the ball and let me decide how things go with my decisions during the game. That's a great thing and why I really like Ole Miss."

Vanderbilt: "Vanderbilt is a great school. It's great academically and it's a great overall school. It is one of those places where you go and you know that you are going to have every chance to be successful academic wise and sports wise. I feel like they started to beat some great teams this last year and they still have a lot of room to grow. They have a great coaching staff, a great style, Vanderbilt is very nice."

Wichita State: "I really just started hearing from Wichita State but I've been watching the since a long time ago. They have a great program, a proven winner program and a great coach in Gregg Marshall. I'm glad that they are able to recruit me because I can tell that they are great at what they do."

RIVALS' REACTION

Perhaps the most interesting thing that Lomax said during the interview with him is that he doesn't plan to sign early. He wants to wait until sometime during his senior season so that he can further evaluate if what he's hearing from coaches is actually playing out on the floor. That puts some programs in a predicament because they may have to decide whether or not to stick with Lomax or move on to other targets so they aren't left empty handed.

As far as official visits go, Lomax said that Florida and Ole Miss are certain to get visits and that he's trying to decide whether or not he needs to use one on Memphis because it's local and he has been there multiple times. He also mentioned Wichita State as making a strong run at the "for sure" visit list.

It will be interesting to see if Lomax still wants to wait until after the early signing period in another month or so when he's started to lock in visits. As things stand, Ole Miss and Florida are looking strong while Memphis is tugging at his heart strings.
