He certainly didn't plan to be playing on the grassroots circuit during the spring of his senior year. However, that's how it has turned out for Rivals150 forward Jordan Murphy.
A 6-foot-7 forward from San Antonio (Texas) Brennan who ranks No. 113 in the 2015 Rivals150, Murphy signed with VCU during the early signing period. But, when Shaka Smart left for Texas, Murphy requested and was granted a release from VCU.
Last weekend, he found himself on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit with his club team the Texas D1 Ambassadors.
"At first I was a little worried (when Smart left) and I didn't expect to be playing AAU again, especially at this time it's so late," said Murphy. "I'm not as stressed as my parents are. My parents are worried 24/7 and I have to just go with it. I'm the one who has to play and they are the ones who have to worry."
A versatile forward who is athletic along the baseline, rebounds and has some faceup skill, Murphy could be a very good late pickup. Having been through the recruiting process before, Murphy says the on the floor part of things is pretty easy.
"I'm just trying to play hard," Murphy told Rivals.com. "I'm trying to go all out. That's where my mindset is at. I'm trying to win."
When it comes to actually picking a second college home, though, Murphy is going to be looking at the stability of a program.
"I'm looking for a more stable coaching environment," said Murphy. "I'm really going to ask the players about how the coaches are and whatever visits I take I'm going to look at academics as well."
Since obtaining his release from VCU, Murphy lists Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Indiana, Boston College, Tennessee, San Diego and Minnesota as some of the programs he has heard from. He is in the process of figuring out which programs are making hard offers and which are just testing the waters.
When making his choice he said that he'll involve his parents and sisters to see what they think. After taking visits to VCU and UNLV before his first commitment, Murphy has three official visits at his disposal and says that he hopes to decide where to take his visits some time in the next few weeks.
