Rival Views: Which program is best fit for five-star Mo Bamba?

No. 4 overall Mo Bamba takes his final visit this weekend to Duke, as he is down to the Blue Devils, Kentucky, Michigan and Texas. Rivals.com's Eric Bossi and Corey Evans debate which school is the best fit for the five-star power forward.

BOSSI'S TAKE: DUKE

Exactly who leads for Bamba's services is a bit murky. Kentucky is definitely a strong contender and Texas could be a sleeper. After looking at the current rosters and who may or may not be back next year, Duke provides the best fit for Bamba’s skill set.

Now some of you may be saying, hold up, Duke already signed an elite big man in Wendell Carter, who ranks one spot behind Bamba at No. 5. That is true, but Carter wants to play facing the basket and is a good enough perimeter shooter that they could co-exist. They could play many stretches together with Carter as a four and Bamba as a five man. Kentucky also has an elite big man signed in Nick Richards, but his strengths – shot blocking and rebounding – more closely mirror Bamba’s, so it may be tougher to play them together. Texas and Michigan have not signed a comparable big man to either Richards or Carter.

What sticks out, though, is that Duke should have several shooters with whom to surround Bamba. Even if Grayson Allen and Luke Kennard both left for the NBA (which is doubtful), they would be replaced by more shooters such as current freshman Frank Jackson and signees Gary Trent and Alex O’Connell. This is important because Bamba is still developing on the offensive end. He would benefit from a system in which the floor and opposing defenders will be spread so that he can use his quickness, length and instincts on the glass to help overcome his lack of a polished low post game.

The potential hangup for the Blue Devils is that they still lack a true point guard to run the show and that is certainly something Bamba will want. However, because of its ability to spread the floor and put him in a position to play to his strengths, Duke looks to be the best fit for Bamba next season.

EVANS' TAKE: KENTUCKY

After helping elite prospects flourish in college and beyond, how can Kentucky not be the ideal spot for Bamba? John Calipari has done as good of a job as anyone when it comes to plugging in one-and-dones and Bamba would just be the next to excel at UK.

Boasting a 7-foot-9 wingspan and unbelievable instincts and quickness for someone his size, Bamba would succeed wherever he might land. If placed at Kentucky though, the five-star center would be unbelievable. He would immediately stabilize an interior that is lacking when it comes to defending the basket and turn a deficiency into a strength.

How poor is Kentucky’s two-point field goal defense? The Wildcats are 165th in the nation, allowing opponents 48-percent below the arc. When the Wildcats cut down the nets in 2012, they finished No. 1 in that category, and No. 2 in 2015, when they went 38-1.

Those teams had phenomenal big men and Bamba could be next in line. Posting Bamba alongside Nick Richards, PJ Washington and Wenyen Gabriel in the frontcourt, there is no better place than Kentucky.
