Richard Chaney Update

September can be a stressful time for many prospective Division I recruits, wading through both the in-home and official visit processes.
But for Richard Chaney of Verbum Dei H.S. in Los Angeles, Calif., he will take care of both trips this week knowing that he has a scholarship waiting for him next year at the University of Utah.

Chaney, a long-armed and athletic wing prospect, committed to Utah in early August after considering Arizona, Southern California, Portland and Nevada-Reno.
Chaney was supposed to wrap up his recruiting process with a weekend trip to Salt Lake City this weekend. The events in New York and Washington, D.C. have changed everything right now.
"Coach Majerus has built a great program," Chaney said. "I've seen some video clips of his offense, and it's similar to what I like to run. I can come in and play right away, and they have some players that I want to play with."
Chaney is the third high school player from the Southern California region to give Utah an oral commitment, the others being point guard Tim Drisdom and small forward Bryan Markson. Chaney said he looked forward to playing with both players.
Chaney is also the second Verbum Dei player to commit to Utah in the Majerus era, the other being former All-American point guard Andre Miller.
"That me consider Utah real hard," Chaney said.
Chaney averaged 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks per game as a junior at Verbum Dei.
A player who is hard to classify by a true position, Chaney is a jack off all trades who thrives in an up tempo setting.
"They think I am going to fit in just fine, running off picks is one of the big things in their offense, I can also pass the ball very well, feed it into the post, give and go, running motion offense. He said he needed some athleticism, and he felt me and Bryant Markson fit into that.
Chaney played this past summer with the Pump N Run flagship squad out at the Best of the Summer and adidas Big Time Tournaments. He also attended the Nike All-American Camp and session two of the Pump's West Coast All-Star Camp.
Chaney said he holds a 3.2 GPA but did not qualify on his first attempt at the ACT exam as a junior. He has already signed up for the SAT on Oct. 13.
The Insiders Report will keep you posted on Chaney's academic situation in the coming months, so stay tuned to this site for more information.
