They are going to have to wait a couple of years, but it should pay huge dividends for the Red Storm when 6-foot-8 forward Qa'rraan Calhoun steps on campus in the fall of 2007. Coach Devaney gave Rivals.com the news about the commitment this afternoon.
"It's a great choice, and we're really thrilled," Devaney gushed. "Qa'rraan really felt comfortable with coach Roberts and the coaching staff and felt like he could trust them. He wanted to go away in September without the recuiting thing hanging over his head. Especially since he wanted St. John's from day one."
Calhoun, who was a repeat junior at Raritan this year, will need two years of prep school before he can become elligible to enroll at St. Johns. Junior college was also considered as a possibility, but now it looks like the choice will be prep school. The decision on which prep school has yet to be made.
Calhoun visited Arizona unofficially, and was receiving interest from Virginia Tech and Connecticut, among others, but St. John's was the only school willing to make a commitment to him now, and that made the decision easy for him, according to coach Devaney.
Calhoun averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds per game this season for Raritan. The versatile inside/outside talent will likely play both forward spots at St. John's.
"He's really just scratching the surface with his talent," Devaney said. "He can post up, he can shoot it. He's really got lots of potential, but the best thing about Qa'rraan is his personality and demeanor. Everyone at our school loves him and is going to miss him, but we're excited for him and the opportunities that he'll have."
