Recruitment heating up for three-star guard Michael Okauru

The roster of available guards, especially for high major programs, in the class of 2017 is severely depleted. For that reason, three-star combo guard Michael Okauru is a guy whose phone has been ringing off the hook.

A dangerous scorer from deep with legitimate high major size and athleticism, Okauru is having a strong senior season at Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy and has seen the interest in his game take off as of late.

Georgia Tech recently became his first high major offer and Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma State, UNLV and Western Kentucky are also involved. Last Wednesday night, Okauru had Mark Fox from Georgia, John Groce from Illinois and an assistant coach from Kansas in attendance to see him in action.

IN HIS OWN WORDS:

Okauru talked about his offer from Georgia Tech and all the attention he’s been receiving lately.

Georgia Tech: “It’s definitely great. The ACC is one of the best conferences in the country. It’s a blessing to get that offer. I know a little about Josh Pastner from when he was at Memphis and he just likes to win.”

Georgia: “Coach Fox said he likes my game. He was asking when I’m going home to North Carolina for the break because I guess he wants to set up a visit. He said they need a guard and he said I could fit what they need.”

Kansas: “I talked to them the other day after my game and they said they might lose Devonte Graham to the NBA and Frank Mason is a senior, so they will only have like three guards. He asked if I was interested and I said ‘yeah of course, it’s Kansas’. We’ll see where it goes.”

Illinois: “That was the first time I ever talked to them. I don’t really know much about them. He just said he loves my game.”

Florida: “They had a kid committed who decommitted and went to Kentucky, so they need a guard like Georgia and Georgia Tech. That’s pretty much the deal with them.”

Oklahoma State: “Jawun Evans is a great guard and they might lose him to the NBA, so they could use another guard to fill his spot if that happens.”

WHAT’S NEXT?:

Okauru takes his first official visit, to Georgia Tech, this weekend. He may also try to set up more official visits after he sees the Yellow Jackets. He wants to get the decision out of the way as soon as possible, but he wants to take enough time to make sure he’s making the right decision.

RIVALS’ REACTION:

Okauru said two schools are standing out to him, Florida and Oklahoma State. Neither of those schools have offered yet, but both have a need to add some depth to their backcourt. With Okauru being one of the better unsigned guards in the 2017 class, look for his recruitment to heat up quite a bit in the upcoming months.
