Rivals150 guard Christian James had a strong showing at the Peach Jam during July and it seemed like his recruitment was starting to pick up. Not long after, he broke his tibia and is in the process of rehabbing in hopes of finishing out his high school career on a positive note.
"I had surgery two weeks ago. The recovery process is going well right now. I get my staples taken out next Monday. If everything goes right, I should be back in December," James said.
With the injury, the recruiting process has taken a backseat for the time being. He's now planning on holding out a little longer before cutting his list, but does have a pair of in-home visits with Oklahoma and Houston set for this weekend.
"I've been talking to Oregon, LSU, Houston, Oklahoma and Creighton the most lately and they have all offered," James said. "Those five and maybe Oklahoma State are the schools I'm mainly looking at."
Houston, the hometown school for James, hired former Oklahoma and Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson earlier this year off the Houston Rockets coaching staff. James speaks highly of Sampson and the system he plans to run.
"I'm really looking at Houston because I like Coach Sampson. I think he's a great coach and I think the system he has fits me perfectly, so I'm really thinking about going there. It's only about 10 minutes from where I live."
Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger is also heavily involved in James' recruitment.
"I love Oklahoma. I like Coach Kruger and (assistant) Coach (Lew) Hill. I'm familiar with their system and some of the players up there already. That's another school I'm really considering."
LSU has caught James' attention with the level of recruits they are bringing in.
"I like the coaching staff. I'm not really familiar with their playing style, but I know they have some good players coming in. It's a pretty good school."
Oregon had an advantage coming into the recruiting process.
"Oregon has always been like my dream school. As time progressed, it seems like their recruitment has died down a little bit since after the Peach Jam. They still contact me, but it's not like before."
Creighton has hit the state of Texas hard under head coach Greg McDermott. They identified James as a priority early and have been a constant in his recruitment ever since.
"I like the way they play. I like their system. Coach (Steve) Lutz and all the other coaches are great. They have been on me for a long time. I've always like watching Doug McDermott and the way he plays."
Since James won't be able to work out for coaches until after the early signing period passes, he's now leaning towards making a decision after he gets healthy and finishes his senior season.
"I think I'm going to wait. My recruiting process slowed down with my injury, so I'm pretty much set on waiting until the late period."
