Metuchen (NJ) St. Joseph's shooting guard Breein Tyree is quietly putting up monster numbers in his junior season. With the season winding down, he's currently averaging 29 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds per game.
Schools all over the country have taken notice of the three-star's ability to score and distribute. Tyree says USC, Iowa State, UMass, Virginia Tech, St. Joseph's, LaSalle, Rutgers and Monmouth have stepped up with scholarship offers. St. John's, Notre Dame, Virginia and Ohio State have put out feelers to the Rivals150 prospect.
Tyree does admit there is one school that stands out above the others at the moment.
"USC is probably at the top of my list right now, but I'm still feeling out all the schools," he said. "I like Virginia Tech, Virginia, St. Joe's, and Iowa State too."
USC's coaching staff has put in the time to make the three-star guard feel wanted.
"I like their coaching staff a lot. They are in contact with me all the time. I'm building a good relationship with Coach (Andy) Enfield. I really like him. He's really chill and plays a fun style of basketball."
Tyree sees Virginia Tech as a place where he could see some action early in his career.
"I like Virginia Tech because of the conference they are in, the style of play, and because they have older guards right now. I could go in and play there early. Coach Buzz [Williams] gets it done. He's a really good coach and he's really honest with me."
Iowa State's "in" with Tyree comes through his travel team, Sports U.
"I like Iowa State a lot because that's pretty much a Sports U pipeline. If you come out of Sports U, Iowa State likes you a lot because of how Sports U guards play. I have a pretty good relationship with their coaches. They have a lot of players that can play, but I really like that he lets the best five guys play. Coach (Fred) Hoiberg is a lot like my high school coach in that way."
Tyree doesn't plan to wait around much longer to make a decision. He's already set a pretty definitive timeline for when a decision will come.
"I'll probably commit after the Pittsburgh Jam Fest. It will be after the first live period. I'm thinking middle of April. I'm looking for a good place to live, a good relationship with the coach, good academics and a place I'll fit in and enjoy my time there."
