Profile Of Stanley Asumnu
When
Stanley Asumnu burst onto the scene at the 1999 adidas Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas with the Houston Lynx program, he was clearly the focal point of that program.
A year later, Asumnu joined the Houston Hoops program, and while he still was very talented, it was more difficult to stand out in a backcourt that also featured ball hungry scoring point guard Carlos Hurt (now a freshman at Louisville).
So while watching Asumnu in the summer of 2000 with the Houston Hoops, he just did not seem like the same Stan Asumnu who was such a dominant player a year earlier at the Big Time Tournament.
Fast forward to November of 2001. Asumnu has signed with the Tennessee Volunteers after seriously considering the University of Texas. Now prepping at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia, Asumnu is simply brilliant in a 105-100 overtime victory over Celestial Prep.
Asumnu torches the nets for 32 points, connecting on six three pointers in the win. He probably would have scored even more had he not fouled out midway through the second half.
Against Celestial, this was the Asumnu of two years ago -- the one whose quiet confidence and well rounded game helped to carry his club to victory.
Not only did he score, but Asumnu rebounded and made some excellent passes in transition, suggesting that he might even be able to help out at the point guard slot in college.
A quick leaper who recovers especially well off the bounce, Asumnu projects as a shooting guard at the SEC level. The nice thing about him for the Volunteers is that he can swing between three positions, giving Buzz Peterson a versatile player to work with in Knoxville.
Before he gets to Tennessee, Asumnu needs to obtain a qualifying SAT or ACT score. According to Hargrave Head Coach Mike Preston, Asumnu is still working toward that goal as the winter approaches.
The Insiders Report/Rivalshoops.com will keep you posted on Asumnu as the season heats up this winter, so stay tuned!
