After a weekend visit to Ames, three-star senior power forward Solomon Young is off the board to Iowa State.
The 6-foot-7 power forward from Sacramento (Calif.) High saw all that he needed to see from Steve Prohm and his staff and confirmed to Rivals.com late Monday night that he had given a verbal commitment to the Cyclones staff.
One of the most physically tough and imposing players in the class of 2016, Young is an interesting prospect and addition for the Cyclones.
Highly touted early in his high school career, Young hasn't grown much since his freshman year. Because of that he's somewhat undersized as far as Big 12 level power forwards go. His listed size of 6-foot-7 may be a bit generous but he has ways of making up for being a little bit shorter than the prototypical power forward type.
Young has very long arms that help him to play bigger than his size on the glass. He is a chiseled 230 pounds and plays with a great motor, loves for the game to be physical and is a pretty good passer. After a bit of a dip in production early in the spring and summer of 2015, Young came on strong during the month of July and greatly enhanced his standing.
Because of his ability to play physical, Young may actually be able to help out earlier in his college career than some others who may be rated higher but lack the strength ready to play right away. How good he can be long term will be determined by how much he can improve his low post footwork and touch.
The second commitment to Iowa State in two days, he joins junior college combo guard Donovan Jackson as early commitments for the Cyclones.
