Parnell Can Be Impact Player For Ole Miss

Rod Barnes and Ole Miss recently picked up their first commitment from the Class of 2004, and they did it by once again dipping into the talent from their neighbors to the north. Jeremy Parnell, a powerful 6-foot-9, 240-pound center from Gosnell High School in Arkansas verbally committed to the Rebels last week.

Southwest Missouri State in the process. Southwest Missouri State had offered, and Parnell had made unofficial visits to Arkansas in the past. But it essentially boiled down to one thing for Parnell, according to Gosnell head coach Len Whitehead.
"He was really comfortable with the coaching staff," said Whitehead. "He's liked Ole Miss since the 10th grade."
While Parnell had a good junior season, averaging 20 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocked shots (including a triple double performance of 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 blocks against Senath (MO)), it wasn't until a great performance in an event earlier this spring with his Arkansas Wings AAU squad that really opened some eyes.
"He had a real good week down in Houston (at the Kingwood Classic)," said Whitehead. "He had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in one game - at halftime. After that, schools were knocking the doors down."
Blessed with a powerful frame and tremendous strength, Parnell is extremely tough to handle down low. He is a dominating force on the boards - especially on the offensive glass - and is an intimidating shot blocker. Offensively, he is still rather raw anywhere outside a few feet from the hoop. Whitehead hopes that part of Parnell’s game will improve this upcoming season.
"He knows he still has to develop his game for the next level," said Whitehead. "He needs to develop his mid-range shot. But his shot-blocking and rebounding are already there. And he's great around the basket. He generates so much offense for himself on putbacks alone."
According to Whitehead, Ole Miss recruited Parnell to play the post. Whitehead knows that Parnell has the mindset to succeed his senior season, and then in Oxford. "His work ethic is really good," said Whitehead. "He comes ready every day looking to get better."
