Pac-10 school checks out Hewitt

Three-star combo guard Jelani Hewitt is off to a strong start for Oakland Park (Fla.) Northeast High School. On Thursday night a Pac-10 school made a cross country trip to watch Hewitt play.
A UCLA assistant coach was on hand to watch the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Hewitt score 21 points and hand out seven assists.

"UCLA likes Jelani," said Northeast head coach Darrance Gillion. "They are coming back on the 19th to watch him play against Brandon Knight."
UCLA won't be the only school watching the December 19 match up. Gillion also expects Indiana, Georgia and James Madison to be in the gym watching Hewitt.
Hewitt, who is averaging 20 points and seven assists per game exclusively running the point, is also getting strong attention from UAB.
Gillion expects Hewitt's recruitment to take off during the course of this season.
"The deal is that he was looking hard at Auburn but then backed off and didn't sign," said Gillion. "People are just starting to figure out that he is available because a lot of people thought he was a done deal for Auburn."
With a limited number of quality point guards still available, Hewitt will likely have plenty of options by the end of the season.
"He is really working aggressively at being a player who can run a team," noted Gillion.
