Ona Embo making his name

Because DeAndre Ayton is such an immense talent, others at San Diego (Calif.) Balboa City can get lost in the mix. One who won't be getting lost in the mix is sophomore point guard Renathan Ona Embo.

A native of France who played at Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep his first year in the States, the 6-foot-3 Ona Embo is adjusting well in his new surroundings while playing for head coach Zach Jones.
"It's a new team and a new environment," said Ona Embo. "Coach Jones really pushes me and my team in practice and we are trying to get the most out of it.
"I try to be aggressive and play my game. My game is to be aggressive on both ends of the floor."
When Ona Embo describes himself as aggressive, he is pretty accurate. An athletic ball-handler with long arms, Ona Embo specializes in forcing tempo via the dribble and his hard-charging style puts pressure on opponents on both ends of the floor.
"I try to do what the coach asks me to do with being aggressive," said Ona Embo of his style. "I try to run the team and when we need a bucket I can make a play and when we need a play on defense I can make a play.
"I'm trying to develop my overall game. I don't want to only be about attacking the basket."
Because of his size, athleticism and ability to make plays, Ona Embo is pretty easy to project as a potential high-major player at this point. He doesn't yet have any offers but he has heard from Arizona, California, USC and UCLA.
As far as Ona Embo is concerned, there's no rush to add offers anyway. He hasn't put much thought into the recruiting process just yet and is more focused on rounding out his game and improving.
"I have time," said Ona Embo. "I'm only a sophomore so I'm just trying to get better and do what the coach asks me to do and win games."
