This weekend the 6-foot-7, 215-pounder ended his recruitment when he committed to Rod Barnes and Ole Miss, choosing the Rebels over offers from Auburn, Boston College and Pittsburgh.
“Ole Miss has been my favorite since the middle of the summer,” Hampton said. “I had thought about committing but my parents wanted to see the school and meet the coaches before I did.
“Last weekend we drove up there and everything was great. The coaches and my parents really hit it off big and the campus and facilities are nice. We had a great trip and on the way home my parents told me that it was a good choice for me.
“I called the staff this weekend and told them I was going to play for them. They were happy and I’m relieved. Ole Miss was the best fit for me.”
Coach (Tracy) Dildy recruited Hampton for Ole Miss and the Rebels assistant made a good impression.
“Coach (Tracy) Dildy recruited me and he’s real cool. We really get along great,” Hampton said. “He’s been a big help by letting me know where I fit into their program. They’ve never wavered as far as my recruitment goes.
“Ole Miss has recruited me the hardest. They came and saw me during the high school season and also several times this summer. They showed how bad they wanted me to play for them and that was the difference.”
As for this senior season Hampton is working hard to improve his overall game.
“In high school I play a lot with my back to the basketball but Ole Miss recruited me as a small forward,” Hampton said. “I want to have an early impact and help them as soon as possible so I am working on my perimeter game every day so I’ll be ready.”
Last year, Hampton, who boasts a 19 ACT score, averaged 21 points and eight rebounds per contest.
