Josh Okogie, a small forward out of Shiloh High School in Snellville,
Georgia, has been a pleasant surprise playing for Team CP3 in the Nike EYBL. The
athletic 6-foot-5 wing has consistently been in double figures in the scoring
column and is starting to show he's added a consistent jumper to go along with
his ability to get to the rim.
Recruiting is starting to heat up as well for the Georgia native.
Auburn, Maryland, Georgia Tech and Tulsa are
most serious with him right now, and the Yellow Jackets and Golden Hurricane
have even extended offers. Georgia, LSU and TCU are
also keeping tabs on Okogie.
Georgia Tech is located just down the street from Okogie's home and they have an
enticing situation for wings in the Class of 2016.
"I think it's a great program, both educationally and basketball-wise," Okogie
said. "They just want me to come down on an unofficial. They said if I go there
that I'll have a great chance to start as a freshman because they lose a lot of
wings."
Tulsa has a familiar face on staff for Okogie with former Georgia head
coach Dennis Felton now an assistant coach for Frank Haith.
"They are known for making it to the tournament," Okogie said. "They didn't last
year, but they were still pretty good. I think it's a good program. Coach Felton
has been talking to me. I remember from when he was at Georgia. I went to his
camps. He has great knowledge of the game."
Bruce Pearl has had a lot of success coming into Georgia for players
and Okogie might be next on his wish list.
"I haven't really gotten to in-depth with them, but I just started communicating
with coach Pearl," Okogie said. "That's a good sign. I'm supposed to be going
there for an unofficial next month. I think coach Pearl is a good coach. He's a
forgiving coach. Trayvon Reed is there now and he's doing a lot better
off the court."
With the attention from college coaches still being fresh, Okogie has no plans
on ending his recruitment in the near future.
"I won't commit any time soon," Okogie said. "I'm trying to see how the EYBL
season plays out. I'm looking for a great education and a great basketball
program because I don't want to being playing for different coaches where I'm
at. I want to play in front of big crowds too and somewhere the city is involved
with the program."
One school holds an early edge for Okogie.
"I'd say, right now, Georgia Tech, but it's only getting started."
