Hinesville (Ga.) Liberty County point guard Davion Mitchell had a breakout summer playing with the Georgia Stars 16U team. He played a key role in helping the Stars win the Nike Peach Jam championship and saw his stock take off with college coaches.
A number of offers have rolled in from schools such as Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Louisville, UConn and Wake Forest.
Most recently, the four-star point guard took an unofficial visit to Georgia when the Bulldogs defeated South Carolina on the gridiron.
"It was real good," Mitchell said. "First, we checked out the locker room and took some pictures. Then we went to the gym and then we just went to the football game. I got to hang out with the coaching staff like the whole day."
Mitchell has known Georgia's current point guard, J.J. Frazier, for a long time - they are from the same town. Frazier has done his part to help recruit Mitchell to Athens.
"Oh yeah, we always talk about it," Mitchell said. "He's told me they take care of you and that Coach [Mark] Fox is really cool. He's a good recruiter and a good player."
Auburn was one of the first schools to get serious with Mitchell and they too have had had him on campus already. He plans to be back on The Plains at the end of October.
"I like them a lot," Mitchell said. "The coaches are really cool. I'd get a lot of minutes there too because they think Jared [Harper] is a point guard, but they think he's more of a shooter too than just a point guard. They said I'd get a lot of minutes there too. It's a nice school."
Florida's new coaching staff hosted Mitchell on an unofficial visit at the end of June.
"The visit was good," Mitchell said. "The campus is nice. I like Florida. Their coaches are really cool."
After he returns to Georgia again this weekend, Mitchell plans to be at Louisville next weekend. The Cardinals' coaching staff sees Mitchell as very similar to a recent player they had a lot of success with.
"They are real serious about me," Mitchell said. "I talk to them a lot. They tell me they want me to come up there and they've said I play a lot like Terry Rozier."
Mitchell says it will likely be a while before he makes a decision on a school.
