Offer for Newbold

2005 shooting guard prospect Tyler Newbold from Payson (Utah) High School is getting some solid interest from some very good programs out west. In fact Newbold, 6-foot-5, 190-pounds, came away with a scholarship offer after visiting with a coach yesterday.
"Utah State head coach Stew Morrill offered me a scholarship today while he was here visiting me,” said Newbold. “I was very excited. He told me that they would have five scholarships to give and that I was their number one target. We had a good visit. He had some good things to say, and I enjoyed talking to him."

Newbold’s father Kelly Newbold, who is a Utah State graduate, shared in his son’s excitement.
"I was very excited today when they offered Tyler,” said Mr. Newbold. “My wife and I are very proud of Tyler."
Although Utah State is the first to offer Newbold, there will be plenty of other offers coming.
"Right now the schools that are the most interested in me are Utah State, Utah, New Mexico, and Stanford," he said. "UConn sent me a couple of letters recently, and I thought that was pretty cool. I received a couple calls from Gonzaga's assistant coaches. Wyoming also called and so did New Mexico."
Newbold is not sure on a timetable for his visits, but he is excited about expanding his game this AAU season by playing the point guard position for the Salt Lake Metro club.
"I’m not sure when I will start taking visits,” he said. “I will start looking into that soon."
"I will be playing some point for our AAU team this year. I want to work hard at running the team and being a good point guard."
Newbold has a 3.8 GPA and a 22 on the ACT, which he will retake in April.
