Oestreicher ready for the Mountain West

As the school year comes to a close, some high school athletes are getting restless, unsure of who will come knocking at their door with an offer to play at the collegiate level. Derek Oestreicher is not one of them however. The 6-foot-9 center from Liberty Christian High School in Redding (Calif.) has already given a verbal commitment officially taking his name off the board.
Oestreicher committed to New Mexico back in March.

"I took my visit in late February and I loved it," said Oestreicher. "New Mexico has a strong religious background and I wanted to choose a school that would support my faith."
Derek, who averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds per game last season, was also offered by Valparaiso in Indiana.
After talking it over with his parents, Oestreicher feels he made the right decision. His mother felt major relief as a result of Derek's decision.
"I'm relieved that his recruitment is over," said Mrs. Oestreicher. "Now we can focus on our younger daughter's recruiting."
Mrs. Oestreicher was referring to Derek's talented younger sister, freshman Jessica Ostreicher, who is receiving early attention from college recruiters for her achievements on the basketball court as well.
"Basketball runs in the family," said Derek.
The New Mexico upholds a competitive tradition every year finishing their 2004-05 season with a 27-7 record overall (10-4 in conference play) and competing for the Mountain West championship. Derek feels confident he can make a contribution off the bench his freshman season and is looking forward to the opportunity to play under the direction of his new coach Ritchie McKay.
Derek earned a 4.0 GPA as well as an 1170 SAT score on his first attempt. He says he is just eager to finish the school year out and continue to work hard in the off season.
