One of the top sit-out transfers available this offseason, Santa Clara standout Trey Wertz has come to a final decision on where he will continue his college career. A rising junior that is slated to sit-out next season due to transfer restrictions, Wertz committed to Notre Dame on Saturday.
“I just loved Coach (Mike) Brey and the staff and the message they were pitching to me about where they envision me fitting in. With Coach Brey being a transfer himself, he told me he wouldn’t bring me in to be a role player,” Wertz told Rivals.com. “They expect for me to come in and have a major impact. Plus, the Notre Dame education speaks for itself.”
A 6-foot-4 scoring guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, Wertz selected the Irish over Arizona, Butler, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Virginia. He leaves the WCC program after starting in 58 of the 62 games that he appeared in during his first two years of college ball.
One of most respected shot makers available this offseason, Wertz made 40-percent of his perimeter attempts last season. He averaged 11.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game, while lowering his turnovers numbers by more than one per game from his freshman to sophomore seasons.
Wertz is slated to sit out next season but should see immediate and also quality playing time beginning with the 2021-2022 season. The Irish will lose Rex Pflueger and Temple Gibbs to graduation this spring while Cormac Ryan will see his own eligibility begin again after transferring into the program last fall from Stanford. The Irish will enroll a three-man freshmen crop in the fall, of which all come in the frontcourt variety consisting of Tony Sanders, Elijah Taylor and Matt Zona.
