The program at Kinston (N.C.) High has produced some impressive players for North Carolina, 2021 four-star Dontrez Styles is hoping that he's next.
Hailing from the same city that produced previous Tar Heels like Jerry Stackhouse and Reggie Bullock, the 6-foot-7 junior picked up his offer during the season and didn't need to sit on it for too long.
“(North Carolina) is a great program and it was kind of a no brainer for me," Styles told Rivals.com. "I always wanted my parents to see me play in college and pick a school where I think can help me get to the next level."
A fine athlete with length and a great frame to build on, Styles is a nice fit for Roy Williams and the Tar Heels for several reasons.
Most important, he has positional versatility. He has enough size to play as a small ball four and he has the skill to play as a big, slashing wing who can create problems driving the rim with his size and athleticism. As he continues to improve his jump shot, ball handling and strength, he has all of the tools to develop into a high level ACC player on both offensive and defensive end.
“I can bring versatility and impact the games in so many ways and help win games," said Styles.
Styles is the first member of the junior class to pick North Carolina and keeps the momentum going after their impressive 2020 class which currently ranks No. 3 nationally. He's glad to have his choice out of the way and doing what he can to stay in top condition and keep getting better.
“It feels good," said Styles of his commitment. "Now I can just focus on getting better and focus on the school I’m going to. I've been working out on outside courts and doing in home workouts”
