For his junior season, the 6-foot-8 power forward who ranks No. 25 in the class of 2016 moved from Ohio to the Springfield (Mass.) Macduffie School.
Last weekend, Rivals.com had a chance to watch him play in the National Prep Showcase. Spellman was solid individually but his team suffered a tough loss. Spellman said he he has been hard at work on his game, but he was more concerned about his team's struggles.
"I've been in the lab working out but we haven't gotten it going but only once and we as a team don't really know how to play together yet," said Spellman. "We could have come out and played a little harder and limited the turnovers."
Spellman is a skilled big man with range to the three point line and the body to battle in the post. He's not a classic high flyer, but he does get off the floor quickly for first and second jumps and he has long arms that make him a factor as a shot blocker and rebounder. He sees plenty of room to improve his game.
"I'm a four who can score," said Spellman. "I'm working on my ball handling, defense, strength and shooting. Pretty much all aspects of my game have room for improvement."
Since his arrival at the Macduffie School, Baldwin has taken unofficial visits to Connecticut and Villanova and both programs have offered along with likes of Pittsburgh, UNLV, UCLA, Ohio State, Miami, Florida, Iowa, West Virginia,Virginia Tech and Cincinnati. Many more with interest are out there, but for now Spellman says he's not paying much attention to the recruiting side of things.
"It's going fine," said Spellman of his recruitment. "I haven't really gotten into that with my mother, coach Dave, Coach Jacques and Coach Bunch. We haven't really gotten that far yet and nobody as really separated themselves yet."
When it does come time to make a choice, though, Spellman says that he will lean hard on his mother and that his needs outside of the usual things are pretty basic.
"Me and my mom will collectively make that decision," said Spellman. "I'm looking for a family atmosphere, that's about it."
