Newbold on the Rise

Tyler Newbold is not a well known name across the country, but the 2005 prospect from Payson (Utah) High School is known by plenty of schools in the west. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound shooting guard is being pursued by several western high majors.
"Right now the schools showing me the most interest are Utah, New Mexico, Utah State, Colorado, Arizona State, Oregon, and Oregon State,” said Newbold, a Rivals.com three star player. “Utah, Utah State, and Colorado have come to see me play. My recruiting has really picked up a lot lately. Alot of schools are sending me letters but I'd say those are the schools that are recruiting me the hardest as of now."

On the season, Newbold is averaging 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. Possessing nice size and athleticism, he can cause problems for opposing players at the shooting guard position.
"I'd say my greatest strength is rebounding from the guard position,” he said. “I try to play hard the entire game and get my hands on every ball that I can. I also consider myself a good team player. I try to get my teammates involved."
As far as areas he needs to improve in, Newbold pinpointed his ball handling and strength.
"The number one thing I need to work on is my ball handling. I'm okay but need to get better. I also want to continue to get stronger."
Although Newbold’s recruitment is limited to western schools at this point, he is willing to play anywhere as long as there is the chance to play early in his career.
"I'd like to go to a school where I'll have the oppertunity to play early. I want to go to the college that I feel wants me the most. Location doesn't matter, I'll play anywhere. I've always been a fan of the in state schools but that won't play a factor when it comes time to make my decision."
Newbold, who already has a 22 on the ACT and a 3.8 GPA, will look to raise his national stock this summer with the Salt Lake Metro AAU club.
