The recruitment of La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere junior Nolan Narain could be reaching a
turning point. Narain, a versatile power forward, has elevated his status
nationally, taken two of his five official visits and is considering
reclassifying into the 2015 class.
Rivals.com spoke to Narain's father, David Narain, to get a rundown on his son's
recent official visit to San Diego State and an update on his
recruitment.
"The visit out to San Diego was fantastic," said David Narain. "It was a great
visit. They really impressed Nolan, they impressed myself. We've visited a
couple of schools and had unofficials at a couple of others but I would say that
San Diego State did a lot on that visit to really impress us. We walked away
feeling good about their program and more importantly about them as people. Over
the 48 hours we got to know the coaching staff and got to know the players and
see how Nolan fits in to that environment."
David Narain talked some more about San Diego State and where his son's
recruitment stands at the moment.
"Overall we felt that what they showed us on video and what they talked to us
about, Nolan fits in very well there," David Narain said. "Overall we left
thinking that it's a very good situation for him. At this point we've come to
the realization that these visits are really time consuming. They're fantastic
when you go on them the teams and the schools treat you really well, but I'm a
busy person my wife's a busy person and Nolan is a high academic student. We
hate missing classes and, as you know, the AAU season is about to start and it's
pretty much go-go-go every weekend. So there aren't any more visits that we have
specifically planned right now but we'll see how that goes."
Originally from Canada, the 6-foot-10, 215-pound Narain will play for UPlay
Canada AAU program on the adidas gauntlet series. Their first session is April
10-12 in Dallas. Narain should attract lots of attention during AAU season but
for now it appears that three schools have staked out good positions as his
leaders.
"Yes I would say Gonzaga and San Diego State definitely, Miami is up
there as well," said David Narain. "There's a strong group of about another five
schools. I don't want to mention any names because we haven't solidified if
we're going to take a couple of more visits and where they would be. So I don't
want to put any names out there because I don't want to offend anyone that
doesn't see their name."
A time frame for a decision has not been set, in part because the family has
considered reclassifying Nolan Narain into the 2015 class.
"That's a possibility and we're weighing our options," said David Narain.
"Nolan, as I mentioned, is a good academic student. We are definitely taking a
hard and serious look at that but we have not made a final decision yet."
Nolan Narain took the ACT in the fall and did well but is preparing to take it
again.
"He's already scored well enough to qualify 100 percent, but, just as a family,
it's a source of pride for us," said David Narain. "Anything we have him do we
want him to do at full tilt. We thought when he took the ACT in the fall he kind
of took it as a dry run 'I'm not going to prepare for it I'm just going to write
it and see how I do' type of thing. And he did well enough but in our family
well enough is not good enough. We want him to take it seriously and do really
well."
Currently ranked No. 144 in the Rivals150 for the 2016 class, look for Narain to
make a strong move into the Top 75 and pick up his fourth-star when the rankings
are updated.
