In recruiting, it only takes 24 hours. One day can drastically change fortunes.
The last 24 hours of the early signing period proved that as top 50 players flew off the board, culminating in five-star shooting guard Malik Monk's commitment to Kentucky.
In a move that once again proved John Calipari's dominance on the recruiting trail, he and his staff hauled in the 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Bentonville (Ark.) High.
Ranked No. 6 in the 2016 Rivals150, Monk is a big-time athlete with an electric first step who plays a game that is quite reminiscent in style to a young Steve Francis. He's now ticketed to be a big part of what is the top recruiting class in the nation for 2016.
Monk is joining four other five-star prospects and that, combined with what Calipari has shown he can do with loaded classes, was enough for him to go ahead and tell home state Arkansas no.
"Coach Calipari knows how to get the best out of great players," Monk told Rivals.com. "He has proven that in his years of coaching. I trust that he will continue to grow my game."
Kentucky's No. 1 recruiting class now features Monk, dynamic point guard De'Aaron Fox (No. 5), intimidating big man Bam Adebayo (No. 7), versatile forward Wenyen Gabriel (No. 17) and smooth shooting big Sacha Killeya-Jones (No. 26).
The group is a potentially special one and Monk is looking forward to it.
"I'm friends with all of the guys and we connect well," said Monk. "I can't wait to see what the season has to come."
