Mizzou alert: Jontay Porter could be closing in on decision

Missouri basketball has been thrown into the spotlight this spring because of the Porter name and it could only intensify in the coming weeks. Jontay Porter, the younger brother of the top-ranked 2017 prospect, Michael Porter Jr., and the son of Michael Porter Sr., now an assistant on staff at Mizzou, could be closing in on a college decision.

Leading his team to an undefeated this past weekend in Hampton, Va., Porter was playing his first travel ball as an uncommitted prospect in nearly two years.

Originally headed to Washington, Porter backed off of his commitment after his father recently accepted an assistant coaching spot at Missouri.

“It has been a whirlwind, especially with Lorenzo Romar’s firing and our Mizzou tenure," Porter said. "It has been great though. We are all excited to go back, but it has been crazy at the same time.”

Dominating his foes the entire weekend, the 6-foot-8 power forward knocked in close to 20 points per game while also grabbing 13 boards per contest.

IN HIS WORDS

On Missouri: “They are great. They went from pretty bad to pretty good next year with Mike (Porter) and them. Hopefully they get Kevin (Knox) and Jeremiah (Tilmon); I think that is like a Final Four team, a Fab Five 2.0, but we will have to see how it goes. The future is bright for them, for sure."

On other schools: “Not many schools have been hitting me up since they assume I am going to Mizzou, obviously, which is a good assumption, but I am open. I have talked to Wisconsin a little bit because of me and Tyler Herro are best friends.”

On reclassifying into the 2017 class: “There really aren’t any deciding factors; it is more about weighing out my options. I have to figure out how much school I have to do during the summer and if I want to do that. Also if I want to have a year to myself to be the man. I am going on my visit to Missouri (today) for an official visit.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

It would look as if Porter is set to make a college decision in the coming weeks so he can get back to focusing his attention on the playing floor.

“I want to decide here really soon, hopefully after the Indiana session next week, when things die down a little bit,” Porter said.

RIVALS’ REACTION

Seeing Porter in a uniform that does not read MIZZOU across its chest would be one of the biggest shockers of the 2018 class. Expect a commitment in the coming days, but for Porter to remain with his 2018 graduating class.
