Hinesville (Ga.) Liberty County point guard Davion Mitchell emerged as legitimate high-major point guard this spring while playing with the Georgia Stars. The 6-foot floor general proved he could both run a team as well as create his own offense and helped the Stars 16U team become recognized as one of the top teams in the country.
College coaches have taken notice too. Auburn, Cincinnati, Memphis, SMU, and Tulane have come through with scholarship offers, while others such as Ohio State, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Connecticut and Clemson have shown a lot of interest.
Most recently, the newly minted Rivals150 prospect took an unofficial visit to Florida.
"It went well," Mitchell said. "We just checked out the gym, talked to the coach, and went around campus. Coach (Mike) White just said he liked my game and talked about how he was at Louisiana Tech and how they played and how I would fit into how they play. I liked it."
Prior to his visit to Florida, Mitchell made his way over to The Plains to see Auburn.
"Auburn went great. They showed me everything. They showed me the gym, the rec center, the football field, the weight room, dorms, and everything else. I like Coach (Bruce) Pearl and his staff. The assistant coach Todd Golden is really cool. They had a lot to say and they offered me. They said they really want me."
Ohio State just had their point guard get picked near the top of the NBA Draft, and that's not lost on Mitchell.
"I know they had D'Angelo Russell. He had a great career there. I think they are a good school for point guards."
Texas could also find a way into the mix here. They have an advantage going into the process.
"I have family members in Texas. Coach (Shaka) Smart seems like a great coach. I like him a lot."
Auburn, UConn and Ohio State are standing out to the three-star prospect. Although he's feeling pretty good about those three schools, don't expect him to rush into a commitment.
"It's going to be a while. The style of play, how the coaches are to the players, how the school is the main things I'm looking at."
