Auburn was not the only team pursuing the four-star prospect. Florida, Georgia, Louisville, Memphis, SMU, Connecticut and others all saw enough of Mitchell in the most recent travel season to extend scholarship offers.
But Auburn had a head start on the field by offering Mitchell earlier, and that persistence paid off.
After Mitchell's most recent visit to The Plains, he made it pretty clear that Auburn is a place he felt very comfortable.
"The coaches are really cool," Mitchell said. "I'd get a lot of minutes there too because they think Jared [Harper] is a point guard, but they think he's more of a shooter too than just a point guard. They said I'd get a lot of minutes there too. It's a nice school."
Mitchell joins five-star center Austin Wiley as early commitments for the Tigers more than a year away from the early signing period for the Class of 2017.
At around 6-feet tall, Mitchell is a strong, athletic floor general that can score with the best of them as well as make life easier on his teammates. He's electric in transition where his athleticism is on full display and he's more than capable of rising up on defenders that are much bigger and putting them on a poster. Look for Mitchell to make an impact early for Bruce Pearl.
