It has been a banner couple of days for the SEC and shooting guard recruiting. Ben Howland and Mississippi State joined in on the action, nabbing Rivals150 guard Eli Wright during his official visit.
A 6-foot-4 wing scorer from Owensville (Kent.) who will play his senior year at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG, Wright confirmed to Rivals that he committed on Monday. While Wright wanted to get a commitment out of the way early, he didn't enter the visit to Starkville planning to do so while on his trip. However, Howland and assistant Corey McCray were able to get the job done.
"Honestly I didn't come in thinking I was going to commit but the way coach McCray and Howland handle everything really made me change my mind," Wright told Rivals.com. "They made everything so comfortable and I know I can trust them and the timing right now is perfect.
"I really wanted to commit early so I can go into IMG thinking about jut ball and preparing for college so it played out well."
Currently a three-star prospect ranked No. 125 in the class of 2016, Wright is a pure wing scorer. He is a bit of a streaky jump shooter but puts points up in a hurry, has a mid-range game and the type of body that will be able to add muscle in the weight room and make him capable of playing with the physicality needed to be successful in the SEC.
"I think I can come in as a freshman and help make an impact right away," said Wright. "I'm really going to focus on improving my outside jumper and ball handling."
Wright has put himself into the conversation for four-star status and joins four-star point guard Lamar Peters in MSU's 2016 recruiting class. Since arriving in Starkville, all four recruits that Howland and his staff have landed have been Rivals150 prospects.
