Ben Howland and his staff at Mississippi State continue to tear it up on the recruiting trail. The Bulldogs latest addition is four-star point guard Tyson Carter from Starkville (Miss.) High who announced on Tuesday that he would be staying home to play his college basketball.
BREAKING DOWN CARTER: Currently ranked No. 62 in the class of 2016, Carter is a slender point guard who is pushing 6-foot-5. Not only does Carter have tremendous size and athleticism for the position, he's improving at a rapid rate.
Prior to last summer, Carter was virtually unknown outside of his home state and he took the Adidas Uprising circuit by storm with MBA Hoops. He shoots the ball very well, sees the floor and can swing back and forth between the point and shooting guard positions.
WORDS FROM HIS COACH: Omhar Carter has had the chance to coach Carter during the summer with MBA Hoops and he's confident that Howland and his staff have landed a player that could push for starting time as a freshman.
"I think Tyson is a very high Division One talent," Carter told Rivals.com. "He's a 6-foot-5 point guard and I think he's the best shooting point guard in high school right now. I think he's a big time catch for them. To get a player like that to compete in the SEC, I think it's rare to have that in your backyard."
RIVALS' REACTION Carter is the third four-star prospect to pick the Bulldogs from the class of 2016 and he joins point guard Lamar Peters who ranks No. 78 overall and shooting guard Eli Wright who ranks No. 94 nationally. It is a strong perimeter group and pushes the Bulldogs class to No. 13 overall in the 2016 team rankings.
WHAT'S NEXT?: Howland and his staff will now turn much of their attention to small forward Mario Kegler, power forward De'Ron Davis and center Schnider Herard who rank No. 29, No. 33 and No. 34 in the Rivals150. A native of Mississippi who attends Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill, Kegler played in the summer with Carter and knows him well.
"They do have a close relationship, bond, appreciation and respect for each other," said Omhar Carter (no relation). "That's not a put them over the top thing for Mississippi State but that's a plus for them. The point guard situation is something that he looks at closely for each school."
