Matthews Eliminates Drama

Maybe he didn't realize it at the time, but 6-7 power forward James Matthews of Denby Tech H.S. in Detroit, Mich., provided some drama last month when he told Rivalshoops.com that he planned on taking three fall visits.
Not that there's anything intrinsically mystical about a prospective Division I basketball player taking official visits on the way to an oral commitment. Usually.

It was just that Matthews had already announced he was committed to Marquette when he dropped a potential bombshell that he was going to take fall trips to Marquette, Texas A&M and Toledo before signing in November.
"I did consider taking the visits to other schools, but then I knew where I was going already, so I just figured I would go to Marquette and that's it."
In fact, Matthews is scheduled to leave on Friday, Sept. 6 to start his official visit to Marquette, and will return home to Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 8.
A physical inside presence, Matthews impressed Rivalshoops.com with his play at times this past summer with Chris Grier's Michigan Hurricanes program. With a team so loaded in the backcourt, Matthews was still able to have some moments in the sun with the Hurricanes.
Last year, he averaged 16 points and 18 rebounds per contest at Denby.
A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Matthews attended Palisades H.S. in Santa Monica, Calif., and Verbum Dei H.S. in Los Angeles for a few years before his family moved to Detroit.
Matthews said he has a 2.7 GPA in the classroom, but he will need to boost his ACT score in order to qualify academically.
Rivalshoops.com will keep you posted on his progress both on and off the court into the winter and beyond, so stay tuned.
