A part of Anthony Mason, Jr. has been in New York City for a long time. Today the No. 105 ranked player in the Rivals150 has decided to play his college ball in the Big Apple. Mason, Jr., a 6-foot-6, 190-pound small forward from Fairley High School in Memphis, Tenn., is planning on helping Coach Norm Roberts led St. John’s back to national prominence.

“Anthony committed to St. John’s today,” said Coach Spencer Johnson of the Memphis Bulldogs. “He just got off the phone with Norm Roberts about a half hour ago.
“He was supposed to go to Marquette next week and UAB on the 15th, but I told him earlier today, if you know where you want to go, there is no sense in gong on those other trips.”
Mason, the son of former NBA star Anthony Mason, Sr., has spent a lot of time in New York City as his dad spent much of his playing days with the Knicks and presently resides in the City.
“He knew he wanted to go to St. John’s, but he wanted to visit and make sure,” said Coach Johnson. “Since he was little, he has been going back and forth from there. New York was a part of him.
“He is really impressed with Coach Roberts, and Anthony’s goals are very important to Coach Roberts. He thinks Coach Roberts is going to bring St. John’s back to national prominence, and he wants to be a part of it.”
Mason, who averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds per game last season, is a point forward who makes things happen with the ball in his hands. He makes the players around him better with his intelligence, instinct, aggressiveness, and floor vision. He can put up numbers in a variety of statistical categories. His outside shot is not a strength, but he shoots it well enough.
“Anthony is still growing,” said Coach Johnson. “He could max out like his dad. He is on the same growth chart. He is going to be something special.”
