Maryland lands four-star wing

This late in the recruiting process for high school seniors, it isn't easy to find guys with a chance to help in a big way. Maryland may have found one for themselves in four-star wing Micah Thomas.

The No. 102 ranked player in the class of 2016, the 6-foot-7 wing from Memphis who plays his high school ball at Huntington (W.V.) Prep committed to the Terrapins on Tuesday morning.

Slender and athletic with a shooting stroke that should travel, Thomas is a kid who is all about upside.

IN THE WORDS OF HIS COACH...

Arkell Bruce is the head coach at Huntington Prep and he's no stranger to talented players. He thinks the Terps are getting a guy with his best days ahead of him.

“Micah has a tremendous upside and a world of potential. Coach Turgeon and his staff are big on player development and high character guys like him.”

“They did a good job of presenting what they would like to do with Micah. Micah ate it up and now he’s headed to Maryland."

“Player development and also patience and just going through the process are going to be important. Being patient with the process is key and him having that energy and effort full time every time he steps on the court."

RIVALS REACTION:

Thomas is a player that we felt was highly under recruited coming out of the summer and we were surprised it took until halfway through his senior season for higher end programs to really lock in on him.

Every bit of 6-foot-7 and maybe even pushing 6-foot-8, Thomas is a smooth athlete who can really get up and down the floor in transition. He lacks strength and his ball handling needs to be fine tuned, but the prospect of him developing into a tall and lengthy jump shooter who can spread the floor and finish at the rim is a good one.

With Jake Layman and Rasheed Sulaimon scheduled to graduate, adding another potential floor spacer with size was huge for Turgeon and his staff and they've now covered that twice in 2016.

Thomas will join a class that already includes another four-star sharp shooter with size in 6-foot-6 shooting guard Kevin Huerter and four-star point guard of the future Anthony Cowan.
