Marshal Hartman May Play Two Sports

Marshal Hartman, a skilled 6-6, 228 pound combination forward from Westview H.S. in Portland, Ore., is mulling over a multi-sport college career.
The Insiders Report/Rivalshoops.com spoke with Hartman this week, and he has had contact with Division I schools for both of his sports -- basketball and track and field.

Hartman throws the discus and competes in the shot put, but Division I programs are primarily interested in the discus portion of his track and field exploits. In fact, he said Washington State has contacted him recently regarding the discus event.
.
Last year at Westview, Hartman got in a 169 foot discus throw, which was second in the state in the 4-A classification.
This past summer on the hardwood with Troy Berry's Portland Legends program, Hartman showed that he's pretty savvy on the basketball court. Although he's not exceptionally quick or athletic and suffered a torn meniscus last year, Hartman has an excellent understanding of the game.
He shoots the ball reliable out to midrange and is a very effective catch and shoot threat from the outside. He also has a burly frame with which to tussle in the paint, and passes well from the high post.
Hartman paid Portland State an unofficial visit recently, but the Vikings have not offered thanks in part to the NCAA's five/eight rule. Two players left the Portland State program, Hartman said, and the Viking staff is awaiting the NCAA's ruling on the controversial regulation.
There is a proposal under consideration to extend the eight to a nine limit over two years. If that happens, Portland State could possibly offer if Hartman still fits their needs.
Last year at Westview, Hartman averaged 21 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks. He said he has a 2.6 GPA and scored above an 820 on the SAT.
Hartman said he is interested in possibly playing both sports at the next level, and will probably make a late decision.
He attended a trio of July events with Troy Berry's Legends' program, including the Finalscore.com Tournament, the adidas Big Time Tournament and the Best of the Summer Tournament.
