For the past few years, the practice of offering players before their freshman season in high school has been catching on. Up until now, Marquette head coach Buzz Williams had refrained from joining the trend.
That all changed on Saturday as Marquette offered and accepted a commitment from Wisconsin Rapids (Wisc.) Lincoln shooting guard Phillip Flory a scholarship before he'd played a high school game.
A 6-foot-3 shooter, Flory is a legacy recruit for Marquette. His father, Mike, played for the program in the late 1980s and averaged over 12 points per game during his two seasons while shooting over 40 percent from three-point land.
While Flory is very young and still has a lot of physical maturing to do, he has already developed a reputation in the upper Midwest.
He's known as a hard-nosed shooter with deep range on his jump shot who competes on both ends and doesn't back down from a challenge on either end of the floor.
Flory is the youngest player to ever be offered a scholarship by Williams and is obviously the first member of their 2017 recruiting class.
