Main Event: Day Two

LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The Main Event had a pool play game that was worthy of the tournament name as Kevin Durant and Obi Muonelo traded buckets and gave the fans at Durango High something to get excited about on Saturday.

Future Big 12 rivalry brewing

Kevin Durant is headed to Texas. Keith Clark is Oklahoma bound. By the way, those two schools are not exactly a tight bunch. The two future Red Riverl rivals went head-to-head and while Durant got it done for his D.C. Blue Devils team, Clark had some help from a friend.

Durant went to work, doing his thing from deep, working it inside and taking what the defense gave him. He finished with 26 points in the 69-63 D.C. Blue Devils victory.

After sinking a huge three-ball in the closing seconds of the game, Durant did something that he'll probably do a lot of in the next year or two. He lifted up a "Hook 'em Horns" hand sign high into the air. Think Clark took notice of that?

Clark finished with 13 points and around seven assists. Most of his passes went to his right hand man, Obi Muonelo. And it's time he starts getting some consideration for the post-season all-star games. The 6-foot-4 guard had another great day at the office, dropping 32 points on the Blue Devils and did it with his outside touch, his undefendable penetration and overall power game. This kid's quest has always been to get respect and he's certainly earned it this month.

The Oklahoma schools were represented and Kansas head coach Bill Self had to like what he saw from Muonelo. The Jayhawks have jumped into the picture and now have an interest in the five-star prospect. Muonelo said UConn has also offered.

Other prospects shined in headliner

It wasn't just about Durant, Clark and Muonelo on Saturday. Both teams had help from other guys.

UNC commit Tywon Lawson did his thing with 19 points and the search is still out for a guard that can keep the 5-foot-11 wrecking ball from getting past him with the dribble. Lawson just gets to the hole whenever he wants and gets a majority of his points at the cup.

Helping Lawson out was the play of super-shooter Jerome Dyson. The 6-foot-3 combo guard had four long balls and showed off his great athleticism at the end of the game with some high-flyers. Dyson ended with 21 points and put together two very strong games on Saturday for the Blue Devils.

Recruiting is still pretty much the same, he said, and a number of head coaches were on hand to see him in action. Jim Calhoun, Billy Donovan, Bruce Weber, Mike Brey, Herb Sendek, Al Skinner and John Thompson all watched Dyson in action. Assistants from Maryland, Providence and Florida State also were on hand to see the four-star prospect.

July has been a great month for Athletes First forward Blake Griffin. The class of 2007 forward has earned a rep for being a hard-working, keep the trainer close by for the other guys kind of player. He finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds against the Blue Devils and he's certainly cemented himself as a legit high-major guy. The Big 12 and Big Ten are eyeing him closely. Think the Sooners would like to add him to the roster with his brother Taylor, a freshman at OU? Better believe it.

P. Miller Ballers will make you say uhh

Rapper Master P has turned his No Limit record label into a music giant. Now the guy whose scripted a song called "Make 'em say uhh" is coaching a team that have coaches asking "Who is that?"

While the fans packed the gym to see Master P, otherwise known as Percy Miller, and his son Romeo, also a famous rapper, it was the play of two other players that really got the show going.

Demar Derozan, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound shooting guard from Compton (Calif.) High School, might just be one of the best athletes in the field. He's got springs for legs and isn't afraid to show off the bounce. He had 26 points against a loaded Playaz team in the morning and dropped 13 on the Houston Hoops.

Derozan said Arizona, Texas Tech, Oregon and quite a few others are interested but Arizona has caught his attention. He attended the Wildcats elite camp this summer and has an open door invitation from Hassan Adams for tips on aerial assaults. Not a bad person to call for advice.

The P. Miller Ballers finished second to the D-1 Greyhounds at the 15 and under National Championships in Kingsport, Tenn., earlier in the month and that's where the team saw Chris Braswell for the first time. Now Braswell, a 6-foot-8 forward from the D.C. area, is suiting up for Miller and his squad.

Braswell looked like he'd been with them for a while. He's not afraid to face up and launch up a three ball. He'll sink one now and then but his best work is done on the blocks. He's got a soft touch, a good wing span and quickness for a guy his age. Braswell, who will play at the famed DeMatha HS next year, is looking at Georgetown and Maryland right now, he said.
