CERRITOS, Cal. – Camp settings are never an easy evaluation as offense takes precedence over the defense. Luther Muhammad is part of the minority as the 6-foot-2 off guard took a step forward with his game on Friday, displaying improved playmaking skills but it was his usual defensive traits that stood out.
Finishing out his summer on the Nike circuit this summer with the New York Rens program, Muhammad has transitioned to being used on the ball more than he has ever been accustomed to. So far, he has passed with flying colors and on Friday, his ability to create for others but also score when the time presented itself gives good reason for why several highly successful programs have gotten involved. “Xavier, Butler, St. John’s, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, and UMass,” he said. “Those are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head.”
Muhammad touched on a number of the schools in pursuit along with an upcoming visit.
Butler: “I am visiting Butler at the end of the month for an official visit.
“It is a great school and it is not a big school like the other schools but it’s in a basketball town. The atmosphere at the home games, it would be great.”
Notre Dame: “For one, it is a really good school. The basketball end is just a plus. Prentiss Hubb just committed there, who is a good point guard, they have TJ Gibbs already, and with me coming in, if I go there, it would be a great backcourt.”
Xavier: “They have been making a push. Basically, they’re just saying be ready to go from day one and continue doing what I am doing.”
Cincinnati: “It is not too far and it is not too close. I have family members that are not too far from Cincinnati, which is a plus. They are pushing to just be ready to go and will get me to be the best player that I can possibly be.”
St. John’s: “It is another good school that I like. Coach Matt (Abdelmassih) has been the main one on me. He texts me about every week to see how I am doing.”
WHAT’S NEXT
Muhammad will finish out his senior summer on the Nike EYBL circuit with the New York Rens 17-under squad.
Heading to Butler at the end of the month for his first official visit, Muhammad remains wide open with the process but it does look as if anyone of a group of schools consisting of Xavier, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, St. John’s and Seton Hall will likely land an official visit of their own with the top-100 guard.
RIVALS’ REACTION
Known primarily as a jump shooter and a defensive ace, Muhammad displayed an improved feel and playmaking qualities at the Pangos All-American Camp. Thanks to his two-way abilities, he is not short for talent as a fall commitment to a Big East league member should more than likely be in the cards.
