It was a tough day for LSU on the football field Saturday. But, Tigers fans could at least find something to smile about with their basketball program as they added an in-state combo guard Cedric Russell late Saturday night.
A sophomore from Alexandria (La.) Peabody, Russell is a 6-foot-2 combo guard who had started to create some national buzz over the summer thanks to his play with Jeff Jones' Louisiana Elite summer program.
Jones confirmed Russell's commitment to Rivals.com.
"He gave a verbal commitment to them last night," Jones told Rivals.com. "Cedric is a big time scorer and he is a combo guard who puts you in the mind of Steph Curry. He has a high basketball IQ and is very skilled."
While still quite young with plenty of developing to do, Russell has some things going in his favor. He is quick to the rim, he plays with loads of confidence, he can get on a roll shooting the ball and has a nice feel for the game on the offensive end of the floor.
At the same time, because he is so young there are still question marks about his future. How much more will he grow? If he doesn't, can he develop into more of a true point guard?
The early returns suggest that he has the tools to develop into at least a top 100 national prospect and for that reason he is a good gamble for Johnny Jones and his staff.
